Around late June, the East Coast comes alive again after nearly two to three months of flat spells. During this off-season, most surfers typically migrate to the West Coast in search of swell. But when the summer swell hits, Mahabalipuram lights up—and this edit captures exactly that moment.
Surfers of India, an Instagram and YouTube page documenting the Indian surf scene, was started by Vaibhav Gupta and Ankit Kotian in early 2022 with the intention of showcasing the country’s rising surf culture.
“It’s been three years, and I can see such a big shift in the level of surfing,” says Vaibhav Gupta, who filmed and edited this piece in the early stages of Surfers of India. “You can literally see the growth in the videos—how much the surfers have progressed, and how much the scene itself has evolved.”
This particular edit is to showcase Mahabalipuram’s iconic point break, located about an hour from Chennai—a wave so consistent and picturesque, it was chosen as the venue for the WSL QS 3000 in 2023.
