The fourth edition of Mahabalipuram’s Point Break Challenge kicked off this week, culminating in an exhilarating final yesterday. The event is also part of the national championship circuit that determines who qualifies for the Asian Surfing Championship, set to be held at this very break in August — an event expected to draw nearly 200 athletes from across Asia.

Sivaraj Babu, a local surfer from Mahabalipuram, took home the win in the Men’s Open after a tightly contested final with rising East Coast talent Kishore Kumar. Srikanth from Kovalam secured third place. Kamali Moorthy, also from Mahabalipuram, had a standout performance — winning both the Under-16 Girls and Women’s Open divisions. Her brother, Harish P, widely regarded as one of the most promising young surfers from the region, claimed the Under-16 Boys title.

“This event not only showcased incredible surfing but also offered key insights as we prepare to select India’s national team for the upcoming Asian Surfing Championship,” said Arun Vasu, President of the Surfing Federation of India.

The final leg of the East Coast Pro series will take place in Covelong this July, following the second stop of Grom Patrol — the junior league that will determine who advances to the finals in Kuta Beach, Bali. If you thought the summer swell was the most exciting thing happening on the East Coast right now, think again. The momentum is real — and the performances, relentless. This is a show you’ll want to witness.
