Tony and the Hidden Currents

In the mid-80s, Albe set out to Sri Lanka to shoot the Kataragama Festival -- but the journey carried him further, to the Maldives. There he surfed alongside Tony Hussain Hinde, who had quietly discovered these islands' waves maybe decade earlier. In later years, Tony shared fragments of his story with Albe, and through memory and imagination, Albe recounted glimpses of a life spent chasing surf and discovery, though Tony's memoir remained unfinished.

He asked me “where would you like to surf?” Not another surfer for a thousand miles, head high sets and water like crystal -- a dream come true.
